There have been a lot of speculation and predictions about social media for 2009 but a lot of what I have read is more of a wish list. Some of the predictions, for example, do not take into account the life cycle of new online apps. Remember when you first got broadband? Remember going everywhere to send eMails and watch videos? Now you are more selective about what you will watch because of broadband. I predict the same will happen with social media. People will sign up for everything they can and then when the coolness factor wears off they will start deleting friends and form a relationship with only one platform and they won't update what they are doing every day. Are brands ready to hear what consumers think of their products and advertising? That's a key question that a lot of marketing people are going to have to answer when embark on a social media marketing program. Some executives are probably not prepared for consumers to tell them their marketing sucks, after all they have focus group data that says otherwise, but the reality is that consumers are already laughing at marketers and their products and advertising. Women in their 40s are highly involved in social networking, according to research from SheSpeaks. The study showed that 45% of 40-something women have profiles on popular social networking sites, and most of these users log in several times per week. Also, women in their 40s are more likely than younger generations to post product reviews on shopping Web sites (62% vs. 53%) and to purchase products based on e-mails from a company (50% vs. 45%).
