Why music sucks today

I was making a CD for a friend of mine and while I was combing through my iTunes I realized that there just isn't any good music out there anymore. I mean I don't want to sound like an old fart but when I was growing up we had Hendrix, The Beatles, Cream and the doors. Now we have Justin Timberlake and Brittany Spears and frankly neither of them can hold a candle to real musicians.

For those of you born in the 70's the 60's were a wonderful time time in America. It was a time of rebirth, rebellion and experimentation. Long hair and the VW Beetle were in and the establishment was out. You could buy a stereo LP for $3.99 and rushing to the record store to buy new releases was the rule of the day. But the great thing about this music was that you could put on an album and listen to it from cover to cover and realize that every track was great. Now, with iTunes, people can purchase the few songs they like from CD's and frankly that's one of the reasons that iTunes is so successful.

I still remember the first time I heard Jimi Hendrix's first album with the songs like Hey Joe and Purples Haze. That album blew me away and to date there is nobody who can play the guitar like that. So what happened? Well my opinion is that the music business became "big business" and rather than support musicians they decided to develop packaged products with choreographed dancers and a light show to highlight the performances. My brother who spent a lot of time in the music business recently commented that the Grammy awards was a big yawn as again corporate America puts its spin on the business.

There is a lot of great music out there if one knows where to look that is being overlooked by classic rock stations. The music back then was great and it was free...or maybe we were just young and free...free of the burdens of getting older paying bills and trying to live at a time when there is no time to do anything that we like anymore.
