A passionate marketers point of view

New role of women: same as the old role of women

images
Women flock to social media was a recent headline on a marketing website. My response is DUH ! Women are a natural for social media because they don't have a problem relating to one another and are quick to embrace a sense of community.

I'm a bitch, I'm a lover
I'm a child, I'm a mother
I'm a sinner, I'm a saint
I do not feel ashamed
I'm your hell, I'm your dream
I'm nothing in between
You know you wouldn't want it any other way

Women's role within the family have changed somewhat over the years but women still are "Dr Mom's" and make most of the financial decisions when it comes to purchases. Women have embraced social media and made coupon websites high traffic areas because when it comes to finance and make sound choices most men are at a loss. Need proof? Just look at most of the CEO's and financial leaders who got us into this mess..99% are men.

Marketers should fear women because they are constantly changing the rules of the game. They are becoming more intelligent about the choices they make and are willing to go online to do research on everything they buy or want to buy. Marketers who try and segment women demographically are making a huge mistake because that just isn't relevant anymore. Women are divided in microsegments based on what they believe and think.

One marketer that has done a great job marketing to today's woman is Dove. Their natural beauty campaign has consistantly been rated a winner by women because they show women as they are not some airbrushed pencil thin beauty that is meant to appeal to mens fantasies. A
Marie Claire cover model who went naked and un-Photoshopped on the magazine's cover generated a lot of buzz and V magazine's "Size Issue," released photos by Terry Richardson of plus-size model Crystal Renn duplicating the poses of a skinny (i.e., traditional) model, Jacquelyn Jablonski.

What does this tell me as a marketer? It tells me that women are becoming more comfortable with their roles and who they are. Sure there will always be airheads (Paris Hilton comes to mind) who spend money like water because they can or Joan Rivers type who have so many face lifts they look like a freak but for the majority of women it's;

..take me as I am
This may mean
You'll have to be a stronger man (brand)
