$40 Billion on Olympic games?

If you you really want to know just how screwed up the priorities are in the world than look no further than the Olympic games which open next week in China. It is estimated that the Chinese spent $40 billion in preparation for the games. That is money that could have brought a lot of help to starving people throughout the world. The Olympic games have become big business and the athletes just pieces of the machine to drive dollars into the Olympic committee.

Forget the fact for a moment that the Chinese are some of the biggest polluters on the planet making the city of Beijing almost inhabitable. China has suffered from an inferiority complex for a long time and this is their chance, in their eyes, to show the rest of the world that they are now a super power. However, with the status of super power comes the responsibility to give back to the rest of the world. The US, with it’s crumbling infrastructure and fragile economy, can’t do it alone anymore. The Chinese need to step up their financial support of countries that need help. They also need to address the corruption and pollution that results in so many dangerous products on store shelves.

If I has a first class round trip ticket I would not go to Beijing. The face that China is trying to portray to the world is nothing short of a sham and con. People who BLOG against China are thrown in jail and those imprisoned report of torture and rape. Stuck in the middle of all this are the athletes who just want to compete against each other. The Olympic committee meanwhile is only trying to get as much money and prestige for the games as possible. NBC is sponsoring the games and their selfless promotion has already started making me switch stations.

So while the worlds people continue to beg and die for food the Chinese will spend their billions to make people welcome. Let’s hope that money can’t hide the charade of what really is going on in China.
